Throughout my life I've heard various people talk about gratitude journals. They would rave about how helpful they are and how much they help turn negatives into positives. It was always like, okay that’s a great idea, I should do that but I never did. That was until two years, it was one of my resolutions that I saw through and one that I will continue for the rest of my life. As simple as it might sound, it really works. You will see that as you start to focus on the positive aspects in your life, all of the rest seems to matter less. When I started I was recently “diagnosed” with postpartum depression and my world, at the time, seemed hopeless. This was one of the things that helped bring me out of my funk. It started in deep hesitation. All I could think of when I first sat down to write was all the things that were going wrong in my life at the time. So I started very basic. My first entry says, “I am thankful that I am alive, that I am breathing and that I am able to take care of my kids.”
Over the last two years my gratitude has blossomed and I am now able to see infinite amounts of beauty and blessings in my life. But I wouldn't be able to see all of what I do today, if I didn't start the ball rolling with those first few sentences of gratitude in that journal. If you want to make changes in your life, you have to start somewhere and this is a fairly easy place to start. If you don’t have a resolution I encourage you to start a gratitude journal. If you do have resolutions I encourage you to start a gratitude journal! Start simply, just jot down a few things you’re grateful for before you go to bed at night, stick with it for a week and assess how you feel when the week is over. Chances are you’ll come back to it time and time again and you will start to see the immense amounts of blessings that are in your life. I want to share with you my latest entry, so you can see the progression from the first time I sat down to write my daily gratitude. It is always a work in progress but a definite evolution from where I started.
I am grateful for a new year
I am grateful for my family and my health
For consciousness of mind and for the love in my heart
I am grateful for my children, for their laughter and for the joy that they bring to my everyday
For my husband and being able to grow in his unconditional love
For safety and for shelter and for needs met
I am grateful for restfulness
For changes and for steady habits, for creativity and for balance
I am grateful for my breath, for my steps and for a heart beating in my chest
For two eyes to write these words and for the light to change the world
I am grateful - oh so grateful - for all of the blessings in my life
Now that I've shared my gratitude, I would love to hear what you are grateful for today. We could start here and then maybe you’ll feel more inclined to start your own chain of gratitude once you see all that you have to be grateful for. Leave what you're grateful for in the comments, I can’t wait to read what you come up with!
